Sodastream Review: Do you still do bottles? A powerful ad campaign but is Sodastream right for you?

  • Sharebar

Thanks for visiting The Sodastream Review Site.  That’s one powerful ad campaign!  Disturbing images and statistics…

  • Bottles & Cans are a major source of pollution
  • 100 Million Barrels of Oil burned to produce 460 Billion Beverage Bottles & Cans
  • Pollution from transpiration of said Bottles & Cans
  • 450 years for ONE Plastic Bottle to Break Down
  • 340 BILLION Bottles & Cans Not Recycled Every Year Worldwide
  • 141 Billion Bottles & Cans into American Landfills Each Year
  • YOU can change this

…throw in some moving music with an upbeat ending and you are emotionally driven to rush out and buy the product.  Here, take a look for yourself:

Don’t get me wrong; I am just as disturbed by these statistics as you but the ad campaign doesn’t really tell you anything about the product.  Many people will find having a Sodastream Home Soda Maker to be an easy way to add some convenience into life while saving money and improving the environment.  However, it is critical that potential customers have the information necessary to make an educated decision.  Sodastream isn’t for everyone and success with a Sodastream requires a little bit of homework.  You must understand the different Sodastream Sodamix options, you must have excellent tap/drinking water (or a means of filtering it) and you must select the right Sodastream model to meet your needs.  If these things don’t all come together, the Sodastream is likely to end up in a landfill with all the bottles and cans Sodastream hopes to eliminate.

Have no fear; this Sodastream Review site contains all of the information you need to make an educated, informed and environmentally responsible decision.  As I mentioned, there are a few things you need to be aware of that just may be a deal breaker and this is the only Sodastream Review site, as far as I am aware, where you will find these items candidly and openly revealed.

Here’s what you find on this Sodastream Review Site:

  • My detailed and candid review of the Sodastream Home Soda Maker product
  • Help in determining if Sodastream is right for you and if so, which model
  • An in-depth Sodastream Review for each model (Fountain Jet, Genesis, Pure, CrystalPenguin & Fizz)
  • The Features and Benefits of the Sodastream Home Soda Maker
  • The Pros and Cons of each model
  • Video Reviews Where Possible
  • Additional Sodastream Reviews and Feedback from other customers
  • Things to consider before you buy
  • Tips and Suggestions for making the best possible sparkling water and soda
  • The truth about Sodamix flavors

Sodastream Review

Before we move on, let me take a brief moment to introduce myself.  My name is Luke and I’ve spent well over a year extensively researching and using the Sodastream Home Soda Maker product line.  I personally own the Sodastream Penguin and Sodastream Fountain Jet.  I not only use the product but I have demonstrated it, given it as gifts and have talked with countless Sodastream customers about their personal experiences.  I have learned what people love about the Sodastream Home Soda Maker and I’ve learned what causes disappointment .  Not only am I very knowledgeable about the Sodastream Home Soda Maker product line but I am also an independent consumer such as yourself.  I am not an employee of Sodastream or any other retailer nor have I been given a free Sodastream for the purposes of writing a Sodastream Review.   I used to be sitting on your side of the screen searching for a good Sodastream Review just as you are now.  Unlike you, however, I never found a Sodastream Review that was both comprehensive and unbiased.  This is why I created MySodastreamReview.com – The Sodastream Review Site.  If you wish to learn more about me, you can visit my About Me page.

I know from experience most folks just don’t care about the details and want to get straight to the point.  Do I recommend the Sodastream Home Soda Maker product as a whole?  Yes, for most people the Sodastream is a welcomed addition to your household that not only saves money but has a positive impact on the environment.  My families’ reduction of waste from beverage bottles and cans alone is amazing and grocery shopping is so much easier without all those cans and bottles weighing you down.  Other benefits of the product include:

  • Turns water into sparkling water & soda in 30 seconds or less
  • Keeps drinks fresh & fizzy longer than the store-bought equivelant
  • Fun & Easy to Use
  • No Cleanup
  • No Electricity
  • No toting cans & bottles from the store
  • Large variety of flavors
  • Fewer Calories & Less Sodium than regular soda
  • No hi-fructose corn syrup
  • No Aspartame (NutraSweet)
  • Carbonators (Co2 Cartridges) are refillable and recyclable
  • Sodamix bottles are recyclable & biodegradable
  • Sodastream is a fully sustainable Earth Friendly product that eliminates beverage bottles & cans from your trash & recycling

Note to visitors outside the United States & Canada: Aspartame is used in other countries.  If you are concerned about the use of Aspartame, check ingredients in your country before purchasing.

Sodastream Reviews

With all that said, however, if you are married to your favorite brand of soda or have a dislike for Splenda, you might want to head over to my Sodamix page before you decide to buy.  Selecting the right model can also mean the difference between disappointment and satisfaction.  I strongly recommend you visit the Sodastream Review page for the models that interest you for additional information.  If you have already decided a Sodastream is right for you and know the model you want, I can show you how to GET FREE SHIPPING on the Sodastream PenguinSodastream PureSodastream CrystalSodastream Genesis and Sodastream Fountain Jet or the Sodastream Fizz in Black, BlueGreen, Red or Pink.  For those looking for a bundled kit option with additional accessories, you can save $10 to $20 over buying individual items with the Sodastream Value Kits.

If you are still reading, I assume you are very much like me and want to learn all you can before deciding if Sodastream is right for you.  Here is how I suggest you use this site:

  • Start by reading my Sodastream Review for an extensive review of the product as a whole.  I warn you though, this Sodastream Review is not for the faint of heart.  I cover everything…the good, the bad and the ugly.
  • Next, you want to go to my Sodamix page to make sure you’ll be happy with the Sodastream Sodamix.  These is where most people decide whether Sodastream is even an option.  You might be surprised at what you learn.
  • Compare Sodastream Models to evaluate individual features in an easy to understand comparison chart.
  • Finally, take a look at my Sodastream Review for each model to determine which one is right for you.  You can navigate through the different models using the tabs at the top of the page or click on my Sodastream Review for the:

    I love my sodastream

But I hate the syrups they make… Splenda leaves an odd after taste

Found this website with all natural sugar syrups…. Much better

    Http:// http://www.arizonaoldfashionsodasyrup.com

It’s also on eBay and amazon

    Fruit punch is my favorite

Hi Joe, Thanks for visiting the site and taking the time to leave your comment. Not everyone likes the Sodastream Flavors and the Sucralose (Splenda) is often the deal breaker. Have you tried Sodastream’s Sparkling Naturals? They are a natural alternative and no Sucralose is used. We have tried four of the flavors now and were very pleased with all but the Ginger Ale but then, I’m picky about Ginger Ale and found theirs to be too sweet. Thanks for leaving the link for Arizona Old Fashion Soda Syrup. They are an option for folks that would like another option. These days, we tend to use homemade soda recipes more than anything else. Thanks again for the comment. Take good care, Luke

I found this website while impatiently waiting for the arrival of my first SodaStream and I think you have done a fabulous job. I was kind of sad to see that you can’t carbonate juice, and wine. I never thought of milk…ewww. I just want to know why you can’t carbonate juice, because if I don’t have an answer other than…just don’t…I will try it. Other than that great job with the site. As my husband says you are nothing but a “sody-sipper” I can’t wait for my machine and not being given “those looks” when I am in the store getting six of seven cases of soda and like 50 bottles of sparking water…I will no longer have to get a cart at the store just for soda and drinks.

Hi Juanita, Thanks for taking the time to visit and comment on my Sodastream Review site. I appreciate the kind words. Which Sodastream did you decide to get?

I get asked this question quite often but it is usually in e-mail so I am glad you asked in public comments. I have to be very careful in how I answer, however, as I do NOT want anyone saying, “Luke said I could…” when it comes to carbonating anything other than water. So, just to be clear, my formal response is that you can only carbonate water with a Sodastream and carbonating anything else will cause Sodastream to void your warranty. That’s my official position and I’ll point everyone back to this comment if anyone every says differently. Once again, my official response is you just can’t and don’t try…period.

Now, with that out of the way, here is why I suspect Sodastream takes this position and why you’ll never see me contradict them in my Sodastream Reviews. When you try to carbonate anything other than water in the Sodastream, it tends to cause the liquid to overflow from the bottles, back up into your unit and potentially cause damage and/or clog the carbonating tube/tip of your Sodastream. I would imagine this is why Sodastream seems so adamantly opposed to folks trying this and states they will void your warranty if you do. There might be more to it than that but this is what I’ve personally witnessed when something other than water was carbonated in a Sodastream. With that said, for every person I talk to that complains about the mess and frustration caused by trying to carbonate other things, I’ll talk to someone else that says they do it all the time. This is particularly true of wine drinkers that own a Sodastream.

If you decide to ignore my warning and Sodastream’s threat to void your warranty, you’ll want to make sue you keep a couple of things in mind. Any liquid (other than water) will react differently to carbonation and will shoot up higher in the carbonating bottle. For this reason, you would not want to fill the carbonating bottle all the way up to the fill line. In fact, you would only want to fill the bottle up just far enough for the carbonating tip/tube to be inserted just below the liquid in the carbonating bottle. If I were to personally try this, which of course I would never do, I would not try it in my Sodastream Penguin or the Sodastream Crystal. I would only consider giving it a try with a Sodastream model that used the clear plastic bottles such as my Sodastream Fountain Jet, so I could clearly monitor things. IF I did try this, I would not be too quick to add carbonation to the liquid, I would take it slowly and I would absolutely wait a while after carbonation before I tried to release the pressure in the bottle and/or remove it from the unit. Of course, this is all hypothetical as I would NEVER personally try this nor would I ever recommend anyone else try such a thing. My official position stands…you just can’t carbonate anything other than water so don’t try.

Comments like this tend to spark discussion so it should be known that at no point in time do I ever edit or modify my readers comments on the site. Whatever you write or post on this site is approved as/is as long as it is not likely to be viewed as profane or offensive to other readers. SO, any other replies from readers that disagree with my official position (you can’t so don’t try) would likely provide a different point of view and in the interest of maintaining my integrity, I would have no choice but to approve them. :-)

Juanita, thanks again for taking the time to visit my Sodastream Review site and for posting your question. Please fee free to come back to the site after you’ve used your new Sodastream for a while to leave your own Sodastream Review on the page for your particular Sodastream model. Take good care, Luke

I am sure you already know this but you’ve got the best Sodastream website out there. No other site goes into so much detail or reviews all the models. I didn’t see anything here for the new Fizz. I’m guessing you are waiting to fully evaluate it before releasing your review. I’m looking forward to seeing that one. So far, I’m looking at the sodastream penguin but would consider the fizz if it turns out to be good. Can’t wait to see your next review.

Peggy, Thanks for taking the time to leave your comments. I appreciate the kind words. You will not have to wait long for my review of the Sodastream Fizz. I was able to get my hands on it over the holiday weekend. I’ve put it through the paces and feel I’ve got what I need for my review. I will be writing and posting it to the site shortly. As a teaser, I’ll say I was a bit surprised at the quality of the unit. I didn’t expect what I discovered and look forward to releasing the review. You should see it on the site within a few days or so. Until then, take good care. – Luke

Please don’t hesitate to reach out should you have any other questions. – Happy (early) Father’s Day, Luke

Well, if this doesn’t prove you work for Sodastream or their marketing company, I don’t know what else you could do. But hey, there aren’t any good Sodastream fansites out there, so this is a nice place to come for info. Smart marketing!

        • Luke
          August 26, 2011 | 12:05 PM

Tim, I can’t quite tell if that’s a complement or an insult..LOL Nope, I’m not a Sodastream employee nor an employee of their marketing company. I’m just a consumer like most other folks that visit my site. Chuck used my Contact Me page to engage me with some specific questions. After exchanging e-mails, we decided it was easier to talk. I’m not sure how that lends proof to anything other than I’m responsive to my readers (to the best of my ability anyway).

Take a look at my Home Page and About Me page if you’d like more details on my story and why I created this site. The short answer is that you’re right…there aren’t any good Sodastream “Fan Sites” and few Review Sites that are helpful. When I attempted to research the product, I had a hard time finding any quality information and I saw a need. Little did I know it would turn into what it has. To my knowledge, I’m the only one offering detailed info on the entire Sodastream product line. I think Sodastream has great potential for a positive environmental impact but it is not for everyone. I’d rather folks come here, take an honest look at the product and decide for themselves rather than pick up a Sodastream without knowing all the details and have it end up in a landfill. That’s counter productive to the whole positive environmental impact thing. Besides, the folks that come to this site are great and I really enjoy interacting with them. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. If you’re asking this question, others are too so I appreciate the opportunity to address it. – Take good care, Luke

I have a bone to pick with you Mister! My husband, Lonnie, found your site and made an argument for getting one of these soda machines after I expressly forbid him to. His comment is below from May 3rd. Anyway, I can’t tell you how angry I was with you when he showed me your site and justified things using the ammo you gave him. I had no choice but to give in. I was determined I’d hate the darn thing on principal alone! I don’t appreciate people proving me wrong! :-) Seriously, I was against getting one of these and swore it was a waste of money but I was wrong. We have been using the penguin since we got it and even I love the thing. No more Pellegrino bottles piling up from Lonnie and my soda cans are a thing of the past. We actually like this better and it is saving us money. At the rate Lonnie drinks fizzy water, it will have paid for itself by the end of the month. Thanks for proving me wrong but don’t let it happen again! :-)

Traci, Your comment made my day. I’ll do my best not to get on your bad side again…LOL. If Lonnie is drinking a lot of sparkling water, the savings will pile up very quickly. That stuff is expensive!! I am very happy to hear you love your Sodastream Penguin. Thank you for leaving your comment and making me laugh! – Take care, Luke

This is truly a great site about Soda Stream. Might I make a suggestion? A FAQ page would be very helpful for folks looking for quick answers to common questions. No disrespect intended but I think it would help. I sent you a private message with a question of my own but forgot to mention the FAQ page when I sent it. I hope you don’t mind me leaving this in comments.

I am still in the process of compiling questions/answers and working out the best format. It should be up on the site soon. Thanks again for your message and the suggestion. Please don’t hesitate to contact me again should you have any other questions. – Take good care, Luke

I don’t usually wast time leaving blog comments but WOW! You are an absolute expert on Sodastream. I thought I knew everything but I’ve learned a lot from your site. I’m glad I found you . I like that you included reviews from other customers to supplement yours and the videos are very helpful. Your Sodamix page was very informative…it was probably the most helpful for me. It is clear you use the Sodastream AND have done your homework. The amount of work you’ve put into this site is amazing. You must really believe in the product but you’ve kept your objectivity and aren’t afraid to tell the truth. Do you have any idea how rare that is? This site a valuable resource for everyone wanting to learn about Sodastream. Thanks for putting this out….you hit on everything I wanted to know. This is undoubtably the best site I’ve found! Thanks, Devin

Wow…what a great blog! My daughter is diabetic and we can’t let her drink regular colas and my wife has banned aspartame from entering the house. I had thought about getting a sodastream to make fizzy water but I see here sodastream uses sucralose in the US. This is perfect for my family. Thanks for giving me the ammo to convince my wife we should get one.

I came across your site when you first launched and were still building everything. I had great hopes that you would deliver a solid Sodastream Review site and I have not been disappointed. There is more information here than I could have possibly hoped for. I am really glad I reserved making a decision and came back to your site. So many review sites talk about providing a review but it’s obvious they never touched the product. It is quite apparent that you know the product inside and out and the fact you use it comes out in your writing. I have to thank you for making this site available. I’m glad I waited to make my decision until I came back here. I would have made a mistake and been angry I didn’t do more research. Thanks to you, I know exactly what to expect now and I have a better idea which model to get. I am going to take you up on the offer to contact you directly with a couple of questions I don’t want to ask here but just wanted to say GREAT SITE man! You’ve set a new standard for review sites! – Grant

You are so awesome! I don’t suppose I’ve read anything like this before. So good to find somebody with a few unique ideas on environmental change. I really appreciate you bringing this product to light. Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles EVERY HOUR and most of them are thrown away. You are just one person and look at how you are making a difference. You’ve already reduced your own waste and showing others how you did it. Everyone that visits your site has the chance to make a change too. Your site is something that’s been missing on the internet…something highly useful created by someone with originality. We need more sites like this on the internet!

      April 23, 2011 | 3:36 PM

Hi Kim! Thank you for such kind words. I know all the statistics from my research on recycling but I still find myself shocked when I see them. 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour…Wow! I never stop being amazed when I see that. There are varying statistics depending on where you get the information but still, it is overwhelming. The sad thing is that most of those bottles end up in landfills. Even those that we recycle often end up in landfills because the recycling centers just can’t keep up. The demand for recycled bottles is not enough to consume the waste from those of us diligent in our recycling efforts. This is one of the reasons I love this product. It has completely eliminated recycled bottles and cans from beverage consumption in our recycling bin. I never realized how many of these we used until I got a Sodastream and eliminated them. Thanks again for your comments. I love getting feedback from those that visit my site.
