Ironically, I get more questions and requests for information on the Sodastream Crystal than for any other model. I can only hope this because I have answered most questions surrounding other models in the other pages of this site. After a great deal of thought and embarrassing debates with myself, I have decided to publish the information available on the Sodastream Crystal until I can lay hands on the model and provide a detailed review. With that said, please keep in mind that unlike the other Sodastream Reviews I provide, I have no personal experience in using the Sodastream Crystal. If you happened to land on this page and own the Sodastream Crystal, please take a moment to leave your own Sodastream Crystal Review in the comments section below.
The Sodastream Crystal is available in either Black & Silver or Red & Silver. Like all models except the Sodastream Penguin, the Sodastream Crystal is made entirely of plastic. The Sodastream Crystal was the first model to use glass carafes for carbonating water. If you have read my other pages, you know the Sodastream Crystal and Sodastream Penguin were the two models I was most interested in when I first started shopping for a Sodastream Home Soda Maker. This is primarily because both units use the glass carafes and because they both have a machine head that moves up and down to enclose the bottles for carbonation rather than the other models where you must screw the bottles onto the machine. I would assume the action of closing and locking the machine head prior to carbonation would take a little getting used to just as it did with the Sodastream Penguin. However, this quickly becomes second nature and proves to be a more efficient design than screwing the bottles on and off each time you use it.
Most Sodastream Crystal Home Soda Maker Kits Include:
- Sodastream Crystal Home Soda Maker Unit
- 1 Dishwasher Safe 650 ML (20 oz) Glass Carafe with Fizz Preserving Stopper
- 1 Refillable 60 Liter Carbonator (Co2 Cartridge)
Features of the Sodastream Crystal Home Soda Maker:
- Turn tap water into soda and sparkling water in 30 seconds or less
- No Cleanup
- No lugging heavy bottles and cans from the store
- No more empty cans and bottles to throw away or recycle
- No Batteries or Electricity Required
- Earth Friendly Manufacturing Process does not produce BPA, Phthalates or PCBs
- Stylish design and color options to complement any kitchen
- Elegant cut-glass carafe that is dishwasher safe
- Fizz preserving caps keep sparkling water and soda fresher than the store bought equivalent
- Small footprint (4.5″ W x 8.5″ D X 18″ H) takes up little counter space
Points to Ponder:
- Price may be a turn off for some consumers but you can typically
- Most kits only contain 1 Carafe & 1 Carbonator (additional bottles and spare Carbonator recommended)
- 620ml (20 oz) Glass Carafe is smaller than 1 Liter Plastic Bottles of other models
- Sodastream Sodamix flavors may not appeal to all consumers

Personal Note: It is my personal opinion that the reason the Sodastream Crystal may not be readily available and lacks the reviews of other models could have something to do with the cost of the unit and the perceived value of the starter kit. As an example, other units that cost less tend to contain more in their kit than this model. The Sodastream Penguin may cost $20 more on average but includes an additional Carafe ($14.99 value). The Sodastream Penguin also has a solid plastic and metal/stainless steel construction, which would be perceived as more durable. For about $5 more, you get a unit that would, in theory anyway, be more durable. Please keep in mind that since I have yet to lay hands on the Sodastream Crystal, this is just personal speculation as to why this model lacks the popularity of others.
Here is what Sodastream Crystal owners are saying:
As I mentioned above, there are not many reviews out there specific to the Sodastream Crystal but here are a couple of reviews from Sodastream Crystal owners you might find helpful:
A Positive Life Changer by Houner44: ”The SodaStream Crystal is a life changer. We no longer carry bottles from the supermarket and instead cannot wait to make fresh soda. We love the glass Bottles and keep three rotating in the refrigerator. When friends come over they all want to try it. We have bought four as gifts and another ten people have gone out and bought them. No one has been disappointed yet. – Read Original Review
Favorable initial results; better than Penguin by Aerocraft67: “We replaced a second Sodastream Penguin with this unit, which uses the same carafes and gas containers. The build quality and design was disappointing with the Penguin. The Crystal improves on the design considerably, which helps circumvent build quality that appears to be similar to the Penguin. The gas valve is operated with a button instead of a lever, which makes the Crystal less cumbersome to operate, and also makes a better fit between the counter and cupboards. The excess gas release is integrated into the removal of the carafe rather than requiring a second button push. Loading and unloading carafes is also more elegant than with the Penguin…we love the sparkling water and drink up quite a bit of it. Delicious yet simple with fresh lemon or lime. Just plain is fine, too; so much better than still. – Review condensed to save space – Read Full Review
Sodastream Crystal Review by SlinkyStudio: “On demand Soda in your home costing pennies a glass seems like a dream…The SodaStream Crystal has a very modern look, using silvers and matte reds or black over it’s exterior plastic body. It will fit into a modern kitchen just find and other kitchen shouldn’t be a problem but your kitchen utensils will feel a tad jealous of it’s looks…To apply new bottles will take no less than twenty seconds, it’s very well designed and has a solid construction making it easy to do… Overall the Sodastream Crystal is a very solid product, the design and construction is superb, it’s very quick and easy to use, a wide number of flavours are available, nice on the environment, it’s very cheap to run and it tastes good. – Review condensed to save space. Greetings and thanks for visiting my Sodastream Review site. All of the pages on my new series detailing the Sodastream Flavors have been released. You can find the new pages in the menu above or by using one of these links:

Well, I decided to give the sodastream crystal a try in spite of not many people reviewing. I searched forums, YouTube, blogs and stores across the web without finding much. You actually offer more than most anywhere else. I decided to get the value kit you show above for the extra goodies. I was amazed at how quickly it got here. So far, I really like it. It seems to work great and I like how easy it is to use but I can’t believe how good the soda really is. I like soda REALLY fizzy and the sodastream crystal can make it fizzier than even I like it. I got it down after a few tries and learned I’m a 4 fart guy. I don’t care WHAT anyone says, it’s a fart not a buzz! I like most of the flavors I tried but the big surprise was the diet pink grapefruit. My girlfriend forced me to get it but it’s good. I bet the regular version is really good. The root beer is awesome and so is the doctor pete. I saw on one of your pages that you told someone to add in a little lemon and lime into it to make it taste like dr. pepper. I tried that last night and it really does taste like dr. pepper. I got too much lemon in the first time, you only need a little but I guess lemon and lime are part of the 23 mystery flavors. I also tried this with the sodastream lemon lime flavor and WOW, that is good! WITHOUT the extra lemon and lime juice, it tastes like sprite but when you add in little lemon and lime in equal amounts, it tastes almost identical to 7up. Can’t wait to make a 7&7 with it. The only flavor I didn’t like was their version of mountain dew. It is NOT mountain dew. I am glad I gave the sodastream crystal a chance and I have already recommended it to some friends. After using it, I think any sodastream would be ok but I like the sodastream crystal just fine. I am happy I bought it. BTW, you have a nice website here. I know others said the same but I wanted to say thanks. I don’t think I would have tried the sodastream if I hadn’t found your site.
Hi Tyler, Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts on the Sodastream Crystal. I am happy to hear that you are pleased with it. I released this page against my better judgement after getting bombarded with e-mail messages asking for any info I could provide. I am glad now that I did as it gives folks like you a place to leave comments with your experience. Thanks again for taking the time to leave your comments and for giving feedback on my Dr. Pete Lemon/Lime Experiment. BTW, I agree with your point on the lemon lime flavor. I add some lemon and lime juice to it as well and I’d agree that it makes it taste a lot like 7up. – Take good care, Luke
Hi. I wanted to drop you a quick note to express my thanks. I have been reading your blog for a month or so to learn as much as I could about the sodastream. I’ve picked up a heap of good information and feel I made a good decision with the sodastream crystal. I have been using it for about a week and it is wonderful. It isn’t as solidly constructed as the sodastream penguin but it does have some nice features. For example, I don’t have a separate button to push to release the pressure before I remove the bottle. It is all integrated into the machine and does it automatically. I also like that it has a button to add the Co2 rather than a lever like the penguin. I have RA and my hands are horrible so this is probably easier for me. There might not be as much info on the crystal but I personally think it is a good machine. I’ll come back and update my comments if I find anything negative but right now, it seems perfect for me.
Rhonda, Thanks so much for leaving your comments about the Sodastream Crystal. I have not gotten my hands on one yet and was unaware of the features you mentioned. Thank you for taking the time to leave them here for others to read. I greatly appreciate it!
Amazing website, good info and very insightful. I have the sodastream crystal. It is a good model but I would get the sodastream penguin if I could do it over. The penguin is more sturdy and will last longer. My mum got the penguin and I’m always jealous. Nothing wrong with the crystal but I thought it would be built better. Love your blog, Keep on the good work. – Aaron, a friend from abroad
Aaron, Thanks for taking the time to leave comments with your impression of the Sodastream Crystal. I am sure others will find your thoughts helpful. – Luke
I just wanted to say thanks for all the details on your site but especially this page. I have been trying to find info on the Crystal and was wondering why I couldn’t. I read your “personal note” above and it echoed my own thoughts. It’s nice to know I’m not crazy…LOL. I can’t find the kits where I live and I didn’t realize you only get one of those Co2 things. I just assumed at this price you got 2 Co2′s and 2 bottles. Thanks for pointing that out!! Now I know why buying it didn’t feel right. I am still thinking about getting the penguin but was wondering which one you think I should buy. Is there one of these that you think is the best?
Thanks so much for your comment Kiersten. I am glad my site was able to help you validate your sanity
. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you which model to buy. That is a decision you need to make based upon your personal needs and preferences. I can only hope my Sodstream Review of each model can help you in that decision. As I am sure you noticed throughout my site, my personal preferences and needs led my family to the Sodastream Penguin for home use and a Sodastream Fountain Jet for the office. There were many reasons each was the best fit for their intended location. I can tell you that I have used each of these machines with the exception of the Sodastream Crystal and they all perform very well. I will also mention that if you have young children, you may want to consider a model that uses the plastic bottles. Kids love making their own soda with the Sodastream Home Soda Maker. If you don’t have young children, then it really just comes down to personal preference and which model you like the best. The soda I make at work using my Sodastream Fountain Jet tastes just like the soda I make at home with the Sodastream Penguin. There are just some minor differences in the process. Whatever you decide, I hope you are happy with your choice. Please don’t hesitate to engage me should you have any more questions. – All the best, Luke
Hey Luke…Just wanted to publically say thanks for all the help!. I hope you didn’t think I was a pain in the A$$ with all the messages. I know it’s just a soda maker but It’s a big deal when I get to treat myself like this. You got it and didn’t make me feel stupid asking so many questions. I just ordered the pengin and can’t wait to get it. THANK YOU!!!
You are very welcome. I am glad I was able to help you find the information you needed to make a decision. I think you’ll be very happy with the Sodastream Penguin. Please make sure you come back to my site and post another comment with your impressions of the Penguin after you’ve had it a few months. Don’t hesitate to shoot me another message if you have any questions. Take good care, Luke
LUKE!! I just wanted to thank you again for your help. My Sodastream Penguin arrived a little over a week ago and all I can say is OMG! It’s amazing!! You have no idea how much I appreciate your site and willingness to answer all my questions. I can already see I’m going to be saving ton’s of $$$. This was supposed to just be a treat for me since I drink so much pop BUT my boyfriend who goes through Pellegrino like it growns on a tree in our yard AND thought I was wasting money uses it all the time. He hasn’t bought any Pellerino since we got the Penguin. Cha-ching! The Penguin will pay for itself in about a month now. Oh, you said I’d be amazed at how much trash the Penguin would eliminate but I wasn’t so sure…you were right! I was never good about recycling but now I don’t have anything to feel guilty about. All those pop cans and Pellegrino bottles are out of the picture….but here’s the best part….my boyfriends cat that wouldn’t stay off the kitchen counter is terrified of the Penguin. The first time it “hissed” she ran for cover and doesn’t go anywhere near my kitchen counters anymore. LOL! There’s Pro you can add to your website!
Anyway, sorry to ramble so much…I just wanted to say thanks!
Hi Kiersten…I was thinking about you last night and wondering how things were going. Your message made my day. I am glad to hear you are happy with the Sodastream Penguin. Watch out for that kitty…I am sure it’s planning the demise of your little penguin already. Please feel free to come back anytime and post a formal review comment on my Sodastream Penguin page once you’ve used it for a few months….and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Take good care, Luke
